Hydraulic variability of three temperate broadleaf tree species along a water availability gradient in central Europe

چکیده

Plant hydraulic traits are key for understanding and predicting tree drought responses. Information about the degree of traits’ intra-specific variability may guide selection drought-resistant genotypes is crucial trait-based modelling approaches. For three temperate minor broadleaf species Acer platanoides, Carpinus betulus Tilia cordata, we measured xylem embolism resistance (P50), leaf turgor loss point (PTLP), specific conductivity (KS), Huber values (HVs), safety margins in adult trees across a precipitation gradient. We further quantified trait on different organizational levels (inter-specific to within-canopy variation), analysed its relationship climatic soil water availability. Although observed certain (ITV) safety-related (P50, PTLP) with higher within-tree between-tree than between populations variability, magnitude was small compared inter-specific differences, which explained 78.4% 58.3% variance P50 PTLP, respectively. In contrast, efficiency-related (KS, HV) showed high ITV both within crowns single trees. Surprisingly, all neither driven by nor conclusion, conservatism highlights their potential

No Evidence of Complementary Water Use along a Plant Species Richness Gradient in Temperate Experimental Grasslands

Niche complementarity in resource use has been proposed as a key mechanism to explain the positive effects of increasing plant species richness on ecosystem processes, in particular on primary productivity. Since hardly any information is available for niche complementarity in water use, we tested the effects of plant diversity on spatial and temporal complementarity in water uptake in experime...

Response of five temperate deciduous tree species to water stress.

Gas exchange, tissue water relations, and leaf/root dry weight ratios were compared among young, container-grown plants of five temperate-zone, deciduous tree species (Acer negundo L., Betula papyrifera Marsh, Malus baccata Borkh, Robinia pseudoacacia L., and Ulmus parvifolia Jacq.) under well-watered and water-stressed conditions. There was a small decrease (mean reduction of 0.22 MPa across s...

Temperate grassland songbird species accumulate incrementally along a gradient of primary productivity

Global analyses of bird communities along elevation gradients suggest that bird diversity on arid mountains is primarily limited by water availability, not temperature or altitude. However, the mechanism by which water availability, and subsequently primary productivity, increases bird diversity is still unclear. Here we evaluate two possible mechanisms from species-energy theory. The more indi...

Spatial Heterogeneity in Tree Diversity and Forest Structure of Evergreen Broadleaf Forests in Southern China along an Altitudinal Gradient

We studied the influence of altitude on the spatial heterogeneity of tree diversity and forest structure in a subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest in southern China. Significant positive correlation was found between tree species diversity, basal area and altitude, but negative correlation between slenderness of trunks and altitude. According to topography, tree species diversity, diameter at...

Quantitative assessments of water-use efficiency in Temperate Eurasian Steppe along an aridity gradient

Water-use efficiency (WUE), defined as the ratio of net primary productivity (NPP) to evapotranspiration (ET), is an important indicator to represent the trade-off pattern between vegetation productivity and water consumption. Its dynamics under climate change are important to ecohydrology and ecosystem management, especially in the drylands. In this study, we modified and used a late version o...
